History

INTRODUCTION

St. Margaret’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong, is an educational institution of the Catholic Church belonging to the religious Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians (MSMHC) of North-East India, registered under Societies Registration Act XII of 1983 (No. SR/MSOMHOC- 55/90 of 1990). The school was established on 15th February 1967, primarily for the Catholic students, but is opened to all, irrespective of caste, communities, tribes or religion. The school is affiliated to The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE).

The School is located in Upland Road, Peachlands, Laitumkhrah – a central educational hub of Shillong City and is surrounded by many prestigious institutions.

EARLY BEGINNINGS:

The MSMHC Sisters opened an elementary school in the campus on 15th of February, 1967 and named it St. Margaret’s School, with 37 students and classes from Nursery to Class I. The School is christened St. Margaret as a sign of a delicacy for Mr. Charlie Dela Nongerede whose wife’s name was Margaret. Initially the students had their classes in the house of the Dela Family and in the later years the couple were also accommodated in the convent until 1977, when the students were shifted to the newly constructed school building.

MILESTONES:

The MSMHC follows the educational method of Don Bosco the Great Educator and friend of the young and aims at the all-round development of the pupils. Sisters and Novices were the only teachers of the school until 1980.

The school began to be upgraded to class VII in 1986 and subsequently proceeded to the Secondary section. In view of the upgradation of the school, construction for the extension of the building began on January 3rd 1986. In the year 1990, the first batch of 16 girls wrote their matriculation examination and since then the school has endorsed itself in the list of toppers in the state board examinations.

The school was elevated to the Higher Secondary level in 2001 starting with Arts stream. By 2008, the first batch of Science and Commerce students were enrolled in the school.

Today, the school has procured the fame of one of the premiere educational institutes in this picturesque city. It reached the zenith of glory as it secured first position in the Matriculation Examination in 1994 and consecutively for three years in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

SCHOOL TODAY:

At present St. Margaret’s Higher Secondary School has become one of the most premiere private institutions in the state of Meghalaya, India. It can boast of producing eminent doctors, scholars, engineers, architects, administrators, who contribute much towards the society in different ways. The Institute has replaced subjects-centered curriculum with a more student-oriented approach. Keeping in mind the vision of the Institution, the students are not only imparted with textual and theoretical knowledge but are also provided with opportunities and experiences to help create individuals with competence and character.

The School has upgraded itself over the years from a small cottage to a multi-storeyed building. The school has classes from Nursery to class 12. It is also equipped with latest facilities and technologies with regards to the Science Lab, Computer Lab, Library, Audio-Visual rooms and School Auditorium
